Farm Section

About Section

The Fodder farm of the ICAR-IVRI is spread in an area of 300 acres of lands and most of the plots have efficient drainage system with underground irrigation channels and well connected with concrete roads. The whole farm is divided into 15 sub plots.

Farm Section

The main objective of the fodder farm is to produce nutritious lush green fodder for Cattle & Buffalo Farms and various experimental animal sheds of the institute round the year. The farm section grow crops like Maize, Cowpea, Sorghum (single & multi-cut), Bajra (single & multi-cut) & Perennial Hybrid Napier (CO-4 & CO-5) in summer & rainy seasons (Kharif) and in Rabi season produced Oat, Berseem, Chinese Cabbage & Moringa crops.

Farm Section produced approximately 1.0 lakh quintals of lush green fodder of various crops every year. Farm Section is also produced dry fodder (Bhusa) of Oat crop along-with seeds of various crops like Oat, Cowpea, Sorghum, Bajra etc. The excess seeds of Oat crop sold through inviting tenders as well as ATIC as a TL seed. The total cropped area comes around 900 acres with cropping intensity of 300 %.

Under agro forestry, Farm Section is maintaining around 5000 teak trees, 69 nos. of Grape fruit and 50 nos. of Lemon plants planted inside the farm road. Farm section is also maintaining 1000 sq. meters of lawn at field No. 09 farm tubewells.

A total of 37.50 acres Hybrid Napier (CO-4 & CO-5 varieties) have been planted in last years to reduce the cost of cultivation and to provide green fodder availability easily throughout the year and also during the scarcity of green fodder.

The Farm Section has well equipped facilities with 10 deep boring irrigation tube wells, 12 tractors and 10 two wheels trolleys & 03 four wheels trolleys for day to day operations. The Farm Section has also three silage pits of 20,000 quintals capacity and a small workshop to look after the repair and maintenance of farm machinery, tractors, tube-wells etc.
