  • Standardized protocol for detection and differentiation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. bovis by specific PCR assay using RD9 and 500 bp primer.
  • Developed ‘Toxheal’- a poly-herbal formulation for treatment of arsenicosis in animals. The formulation was found very effective to ameliorate the experimental arsenicosis in poultry model.
  • Developed mutation scan screening for molecular prospecting of Haemonchus and Oesophagostomum spp. of caprine origin. This is a molecular epidemiological study on founding parasite population of the region.
  • Identified toxicological biomarker (HSP70) in birds for early detection of arsenicosis, a burning problem in Gangetic delta.

  • Developed PCR-based method for differentiation of cryptic stages of Taenia and Echinococcus of animal origin to overcome the shortcomings of conventional test.
  • Developed biomarker based diagnostic kit for diagnosis of E. granulosus infection in man and animals.
  • Applied copro-antigen based ELISA test for detection of canine echinococcosis.
  • Developed recombinant somatic antigen based DOT-ELISA diagnostic kit for seromonitoring of Oesophagostomum and Bunostomum parasitic infections in ruminants.

  • Established “Drug Read Out System” in in vitro towards assessing efficacy of anticestodal drug and nanobiotics to tackle the anthelmintic resistance problem.
  • Detected virulent emerging bacterial food borne zoonotic pathogen like Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC) from human and animal by chromosomal and plasmid mediated gene PCR.
  • Identified and sequenced (full length) serine threonine phosphatase gene of Oesophagostomum venulosum and O. aspersum of sheep and goat origin coding for 31 kDa specific immuno-diagnostic protein.
  • Confirmed new isolates of Haemonchus contortus and Oesophagostomum venulosum in West Bengal through molecular study by variation in nucleotide sequence of ITS 1 segments and single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP).

  • Survey in arsenic affected four villages of Nadia district revealed total of 2589 livestock [cattle, (971, 37.5%), followed by poultry (745, 28.62%), goat (482, 18.62%) and ducks (391, 15.10%)] under risk of the chronic arsenicosis through contaminated water and feed.
  • Study on arsenic contamination in ground water and feed in three villages of West Bengal covering 2589 livestock revealed retarded growth (75.89%), low milk yield (60.74%) and repeat breeding in cattle.
  • Devised a growth promoter for birds blending microbial (Mycobacterium phlei) immunomodulator & herbal formulation (Tinospora cordifolia), which apart from increasing body weight, mitigates adverse effect of subclinical caecal coccidiosis enhancing profitability of farmers.
  • Sequence analysis of rDNA from 15 isolates of Echinococcus granulosus (cattle, buffalo and sheep) of Indian origin showed phylogenetic grouping under Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto.
  • CoxI gene sequence analysis of two sheep isolates and one buffalo isolate of Indian Origin showed homology to Tasmanian sheep strain (G2) of Echinococcus granulosus, which is infective to man and also having shorter pre-patent period in dog. Presence of G2 genotype of E. granulosus in Indian water buffalo is the first report from India.

  • Escherichia coli isolates from animal sources found resistant to Cefpodoxime – one of the frontline remedy (third generation cephalosporins) in human patients in critical conditions indicating grave public health concern.
  • Introduced scientific animal husbandry practices through information, education and communication campaign within traditional farming system for resource–poor farmers, especially tribal and SC women.
