» Division of Animal Genetics

Major Activities

AG IVRI
  • The division conducts research in thrust areas of Animal Genetics and Breeding as enlisted:
    • Genetic evaluation of disease resistance in livestock and poultry.
    • Identification of genetic markers for growth, production, reproduction and health of livestock and poultry.
    • Molecular characterization and localization of structural genes in buffaloes.
    • Development of breeding plans for genetic improvement of livestock
  • The division also has the responsibility of producing laboratory animals’ viz., rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits for research, testing of biologicals and diagnostic purposes.
  • The division imparts post-graduation education in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding at Master’s and Doctorate levels besides being a partner in many Diploma courses offered by Deemed University. 211 M. V. Sc. and 75 Ph. D. students have completed their academic programmes up to the year 2009.
  • A number of short-term training programmes of 1-4 months are organized to train UG and PG students registered at other organizations.
  • The division also provides consultancy in the upstream areas of Animal Genetics and Breeding.
