Major Achievements

  • A modified diagnostic method is being developed for detection of extended-spectrum (ESBL) producing multi-drug resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae in food and companion animals. Preliminary findings revealed promising features of increased sensitivity and rapidity.
  • Whole Genome Sequence analyses of representative Mycobacterial isolates (n=30) from domestic and wild animals suggest higher prevalence of Mycobacteriumorygis(19/30) in India.
  • Reportedvancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in milk samples of bovine and caprine origin for the first time in the world. Further, two MRSA strains with novel spa type t15798, t16344 were detected from caprine and bubaline mastitis in West Bengal.
  • Recombinant ESAT6-CFP10 fusion protein can be a useful diagnostic antigen for differentiation of infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in cattle by Indirect ELISA. Further other recombinant expressed candidate proteins (ESAT-6, CFP-10, and MPB86) have the potential to differentiate the infection by members of MTBC from NTMs.
  • Pathogenic (tdh+) Vibrio parahaemolyticus was identified in 16.57% and 15.65% saline fish and water, respectively. Further, frequency of pandemic potential isolates were detected in 2.85% and 5.21% of such fish and water samples. Phylogenetic analysis by AP-PCR, PFGE and ribotyping showed considerable lineage (65% to 86%) between human and fish isolates which reflected the public health risk potentials of fish of eastern India for habouring pathogenic and pandemic V. parahaemolyticus and possible dissemination through food chain.
  • Molecular epidemiology of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in dairy animals of the eastern and north-eastern states revealed the clonal lineage of the MRSA circulating in this region with predominant spa (t005, t202, t267, t524, t527, t740, t800, t852, t3626, t4463, t4931, and t6297) and sequence types (ST-63, ST-71, ST-97, ST-2219, ST-1297).
  • ICAR-IVRI ERS Kolkata AChievements 1
  • ICAR-IVRI ERS Kolkata AChievements 2 A rapid and specific multiplex PCR assay was evaluated and validated on clinical samples for early confirmation of bovine tuberculosis. The PCR can detect and differentiate Mycobacterium bovis and M. tuberculosis from clinical samples with amplicon of 168 bp and 262 bp, respectively.
  • Package of practices for controlling gastrointestinal parasites in goat: Screening of faecal samples (>4000)on monthly basis over a period of 2 years from Kalyani farm (n=135) and farmers’ field (n=50) for monitoring seasonal occurrence of gastrointestinal and coccidial infections in goat revealed that gastrointestinal parasitic infection is positively correlated with rainfall,
