- Various outreach and extension activities are regularly organized as part of the service project titled “Livestock Extension and Human Resource Development programmes”. These initiatives include training programs, interface meetings, industry-academia meets, animal health camps, radio talks, and teleconsultations. Additionally, important national days are observed to raise awareness among stakeholders. Furthermore, diverse digital platforms such as mobile apps, chatbots, and educational videos are utilized to extend their benefits nationwide, enhancing livestock health and production.
1. Trainings
The training programs conducted under the JDEE aim to enhance knowledge and skills in animal husbandry, livestock management and veterinary practices, reaching a wide range of participants across various regions. During 2018-19 and 2023-24, a total of 24 training programs were conducted, focusing on animal husbandry, livestock management, and veterinary practices, with a total revenue of ₹16,92,420 for 608 participants. The programs were mainly targeted at farmers, veterinary officers, and students and many were sponsored by various institutions like ATMA, NGOs, SDAH and ICAR. The topics covered include Unnat pashu palan, Herd management, Organic animal husbandry, Veterinary diagnostics and the Application of IoT in dairy businesses etc. The participants in training program were from different regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Ladakh and others..
2. Exhibitions
Exhibitions are the large-scale events, typically organized at the regional, national or international levels, where agricultural innovations, livestock practices and rural development solutions are showcased to farmers, researchers, industry professionals and the general public. These exhibitions aim to promote the exchange of knowledge, introduce new technologies, and encourage the adoption of best practices in farming, animal husbandry and veterinary care. They also serve as platforms for networking where farmers can meet experts, suppliers and institutions, strengthening an environment for learning, collaboration and growth. ICAR-IVRI has been actively involved in participating in numerous agricultural and livestock exhibitions across India over several years. These exhibitions are focused on promoting technology developed by IVRI, innovations, veterinary practices, livestock health and technology transfer in agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy farming and related fields.
Over the years, ICAR-IVRI has participated in events like Krishi Unnati Mela in New Delhi, Pusa Krishi Vigyan Mela, Krishi Kumbh Kisan Melas, Rashtriya Dairy mela etc. in various locations such as New Delhi, Pantnagar, Karnal etc. In addition to these exhibitions, ICAR-IVRI has been involved in significant events like the G20 Summit and technical workshops on topics like “One Health” and “Opportunities & Challenges.” Their participation in these national and international platforms helps highlight their contributions to veterinary science and agriculture, furthering knowledge exchange and collaboration within the agricultural community. ICAR-IVRI’s exhibitions also emphasize research advancements, such as in livestock health, livestock fodder, female breeding and livestock management, benefiting both the academic community and farmers across India. These events take place at various prestigious institutions, agricultural fairs and government initiatives, with a special focus on livestock health, dairy farming and sustainable agriculture. Thus, during 2018-19 to 2023-24, the institute represented in 57 exhibitions and kisan mela organized across the country..
3. Interface Meets and Industry Academia Meets
Interface Meets and Industry-Academia Meets are collaborative events designed for direct interaction between academicians, researchers, industry professionals and government agencies, creating a platform where innovative technologies and scientific knowledge can be shared, commercialized and put into practical use. These meetings also serve as important spaces to address the queries and problems faced by different stakeholders, particularly in the areas of animal husbandry and veterinary science, while generating researchable issues related to improving livestock management, feeding, health care, production, disease diagnosis and control, breeding practices and the overall welfare of animals.
ICAR-IVRI has actively organized and participated in 22 interface meetings and industry academia meets during 2018-19 to 2023-24, with a total of 4,851 participants. These meetings aimed to promote collaboration among industry, academia, and veterinary professionals. The number of events increased over the years, especially in 2021-22 and 2023-24, with significant participation of 2,119 and 2,144 stakeholders, respectively. The topics discussed at these events included animal health, poultry farming, feed and fodder production and potential collaborations between industry and scientific research.
The meets were conducted across various locations, including Izatnagar, Mukteshwar, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore and Palampur, engaging a diverse range of stakeholders such as veterinary officers, industry leaders and officials from state animal husbandry departments (SDAHs). Prominent participants in the industry-academia meets included representatives from industries like Indian Immunologicals, Hester Biosciences, Biovet, Brilliant Biopharma, MSD, Intas Animal Health, Kamdhenu, Indian Herbs, VM Agro, Anjali Cattle Feed, Ayush Herbs etc. For the interface meets, key attendees comprised directors and officials from SDAHs of various states, including the North Eastern regions, as well as representatives from ATARIs and KVK.
The most significant of the meetings was the All India State Animal Husbandry Directors Interface Meet on Advances in Animal Health and Production organized on 23 September, 2023 by ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar with the Animal Husbandry Directors of various states and UTs of the country as part of the Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations. The Directors and veterinary personnel from 28 States and 6 Union territories of the country registered for the interface meeting. The inaugural session was graced by Shri Parshottam Rupala, Hon'ble Union Cabinet Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India as the Chief Guest & Dr Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, DAHD&F, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India as the Guest of Honor.
Sh. Parshottam Rupala ji addressed the gathering and lauded the role of IVRI and its relentless service to livestock of the country. The role of ‘manthan’ platforms like this are invaluable as they provide a ground for interaction of all concerned personnel. He noted that this IFM, which is the first of its kind has set a new trend. He informed about various initiatives of animal husbandry ministry for the farmers. He called upon the animal husbandry directors to implement all schemes of the Ministry in full force so that the farmers get benefited and the animal wealth of the country meet their full potential. He urged the scientists to develop means to record birth and death of animals so that we can monitor animal population in real-time and census can be done in a reliable manner. He appreciated the role of veterinarians in nation building and urged all the stakeholders to contribute in this area with the same rigour.
4. Researchable issues drawn from various interface meets
Researchable issues identified from various interface meetings, focusing on various areas of actionable points. These areas include vaccine development, nutritional interventions, value addition in animal products, herb-based health solutions, diagnostics and the integration of smart technologies in animal health. Each area emphasized innovative approaches such as artificial intelligence and machine learning diagnostics, biocompostable solutions and methane-controlled diets. The goal is to enhance health, productivity and sustainability in animal husbandry.
5. Animal Health Camps
Animal health camps were organized as outreach programs aimed at providing free-cost veterinary care to animals, especially in rural areas. It is a temporary veterinary service setup that provides medical care, vaccinations, deworming, treatment for diseases and general health check-ups for livestock, pets and stray animals. ICAR-IVRI organized a total of 83 animal health camps between 2018-19 to 2023-24, addressing 16,837 cases in total. In the 2018-19 period, 34 health camps were organized, treating a total of 7,894 cases. However, in 2019-20, the number of camps decreased to 24, and the number of treated cases also dropped to 6,249. A significant gap is observed in the following two years, 2020-21 and 2021-22, where no health camps were held, resulting in zero cases treated during these periods due to COVID lockdown. In 2022-23, 7 camps were conducted, leading to the treatment of 1,437 cases. The most recent data from 2023-24 shows 18 camps, which treated 1,257 cases.
6. Radio Talks
Radio plays an important role in the agriculture and veterinary sectors in India, serving as a vital tool for disseminating information and supporting rural communities. As a primary medium of communication, radio reaches millions of farmers, particularly in remote areas, where access to other forms of media is limited. All India Radio (AIR), India’s Public Service Broadcaster and the radio vertical of Prasar Bharati, has been serving to inform, educate, and entertain audiences since its inception, staying true to its motto, ‘Bahujan Hitaya: Bahujan Sukhaya’. As one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world, AIR stands out for its extensive linguistic diversity and its reach across India’s socio-economic and cultural spectrum. Its home service includes 591 broadcasting centers across the country, covering nearly 90% of the geographical area and reaching 98% of the population. AIR terrestrially broadcasts in 23 languages and 179 dialects, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and cultural representation.
AIR has long been involved in agricultural extension services, providing farmers with information on best practices, weather forecasts, livestock disease management, pest management and government schemes.
ICAR-IVRI organized a total of 180 radio talks through its “Farm School on Air” program in collaboration with Prasar Bharati, All India Radio, Rampur and Bareilly during 2018-19 to 2023-24. The number of radio talks varied each year, with 17 talks in 2018-19, 15 in 2019-20, and 13 in 2020-21. In 2021-22, the number of talks increased to 21, followed by 20 talks in 2022-23. However, the program saw a significant surge in 2023-24, with 94 radio talks conducted. The overall trend shows a steady engagement in the earlier years, with a substantial increase in 2023-24, indicating a growing outreach of the “Farm School on Air” program to the farming community.
7. Tele consultancies
Teleconsultancy is a service that allows farmers to seek expert advice remotely via phone or digital platforms, without having to visit veterinary clinics. At ICAR-IVRI, the helpline number 0581-2311111 provides teleconsultancy to farmers across India. This facility is available from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on all working days. ICAR-IVRI scientists are actively involved in assisting farmers through teleconsultancy. Farmers can call this number for support with queries related to animal husbandry, livestock health, disease management, and other relevant areas.
Farmers, livestock holders, and others from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other states can access teleconsultation through the toll-free Kisan Call Centre number 1800-180-1551 for immediate solutions to their problems from subject matter experts. The IVRI serves as the Level-II node of the KCC, addressing animal production and health queries that cannot be resolved by Level-I experts at Kanpur (for UP and Uttarakhand). The service operates 24/7, with live assistance available from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

In 2018-19, there were 15,455 teleconsultancies, reflecting a significant initial engagement. The number dropped in the following years, with 4,160 consultations in 2019-20, 1,833 in 2020-21, and 1,326 in 2021-22, showing a decline in demand or access during those years. However, there was a sharp increase in 2022-23, with 17,929 consultations, and even higher in 2023-24, with 19,959 consultations. This increase suggests a rising reliance on teleconsultancy services, particularly in recent years, possibly due to increased awareness or more effective outreach to farmers and veterinary professionals.
8. Educational Exposure Visits
ICAR-IVRI regularly organizes exposure visits for progressive farmers, livestock owners, farm women, rural youth, professionals, agriculture and veterinary graduates, as well as school children, based on their interest in visiting the institute. During these visits, participants are guided through various key areas of the institute, including the dairy and piggery farms, fodder demonstration unit, polyclinic, vermicompost unit, KVK demonstration farm, and ATIC. Additionally, they are shown around different divisions of the institute to familiarize them with the latest research developments and technologies being implemented. The exposure helps enhance knowledge in areas such as disease prevention, livestock health and best practices in animal husbandry. Farmers, in particular, benefit by learning new techniques for improving livestock productivity and managing animal health.
The educational exposure visits conducted over six years, from 2018-19 to 2023-24 shows increase in visits from 74 in 2018-19 to 80 in 2019-20, followed by a significant drop to just 2 visits in 2020-21, likely due to pandemic-related restrictions. Activities resumed in 2021-22 with 13 visits, showing gradual recovery. This momentum continued with a remarkable surge to 130 visits in 2022-23 and further to 144 in 2023-24, reflecting a strong commitment to educational outreach. In total, 443 exposure visits were organized, demonstrating consistent efforts to provide hands-on learning experiences. Over six years, a total of 30,030 visitors participated in various programs, with numbers peaking at 11,987 in 2023-24, reflecting growing engagement after pandemic-related declines. Among visitors, the school children comprised the largest group (72.45%), followed by students in UG/PG programs at (12.8%), farmers (7.32%) and extension personnel (7.03%).

9. Important Days Celebration
ICAR-IVRI celebrates several important days throughout the year to raise awareness about important issues related to agriculture, livestock, health, and the environment. These celebrations focus on important topics such as women’s empowerment, sustainable farming practices, animal welfare, food security, and environmental conservation. ICAR-IVRI celebrates various important days such as International Women’s Day (8th March), World Milk Day (1st June), World Environment Day (5th June), World Animal Day (4th October), World Food Day (16th October), World Zoonoses day (6th July), World Rabies Day (28th September), One health (3rd November), AMR Awareness Week (18-24 November), Agricultural Education Day (3rd December), World Soil Day (15th December), Kisan Samman Diwas (22nd December) and Kisan Diwas (23rd December), National Girl Child Day (24th January), International Mother language day (21st February) to create awareness about the importance of these days among the farmers/ farmwomen, students and academicians and to attract the youth towards employment in the livestock sector. Thus, total 45 days of national importance were celebrated during past six year with 9437 participants.
10. Community Outreach through Social Media and Educational Videos
The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) leverages various social media and online platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and its official website to share educational content and interact with its audience. On Facebook, the IVRI page reached an impressive 42.6K users in 2024, while maintaining 3,432 followers. Instagram showed remarkable performance with 65.4K views, 3,748 interactions, and 2,108 followers, achieved through consistent posting, with 365 posts over the year. On X (Twitter), IVRI garnered 2,403 followers, enabling active dissemination of updates and news. The IVRI's official website experienced significant traffic, attracting 179K users in 2024 and amassing 1.4 million page views, highlighting its role as a key source of information for stakeholders. On YouTube, the institute's educational content reached vast audiences through two distinct channels: the IVRI Deemed University Educational Videos channel and the IVRI Izatnagar YouTube channel. Overall, this strategic use of digital platforms has significantly amplified IVRI's visibility, fostering knowledge dissemination and engagement with students, researchers, and the general public worldwide.

Available in 10 Indian languages with speech input and output, they cater to different livestock sectors and are available on the Google Play Store free of cost. Users can provide feedback by posting comments, liking or disliking answers, enhancing the chatbot's response quality. All SHRIA chatbots feature real-time monitoring through the SHRIA Dashboard and integrate seamlessly with other platforms. IVRI SHRIA chatbots are the one-stop solution for livestock management, promoting efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Dairy SHRIA
IVRI-Dairy SHRIA is a comprehensive AI-powered platform designed to support dairy farmers by covering key aspects of dairy farming, including breeding strategies, optimal feeding practices, preventative healthcare, calf-rearing techniques, organic dairy practices, insurance options, and economic considerations. Launched on February 15, 2023, with a download size of 20 MB, Dairy SHRIA aims to improve livestock health, reduce mortality rates, and enhance dairy farmers' incomes. By providing timely, scientific information in a user-friendly format, the platform empowers farmers to adopt best practices, ultimately promoting efficiency, sustainability, and profitability in dairy farming operations.
Sheep & Goat SHRIA
The state-of-the-art AI-powered IVRI Sheep & Goat SHRIA platform was developed specifically to assist sheep and goat farmers with their diverse farming needs. It focuses on critical areas such as breeding strategies to improve genetic potential, feeding practices to enhance nutrition and productivity, kid and lamb rearing for better survival rates, and healthcare measures to prevent diseases. The platform also covers housing designs for optimal animal welfare, management techniques to streamline operations, marketing strategies to maximize profits, insurance options to mitigate risks, and economic considerations to improve overall profitability. Launched on December 18, 2023, with a lightweight download size of 9.5 MB, Sheep & Goat SHRIA promotes the adoption of scientific practices to boost productivity and incomes among small ruminant farmers. By delivering on-time, credible, and science-based information, the platform empowers farmers to achieve higher efficiency and sustainability in their farming operations while improving livestock health and reducing losses.
Swine SHRIA
IVRI Swine SHRIA is a cutting-edge AI-powered platform created especially to help pig farmers with their various farming requirements. It covers topics such as animal care, breed selection, optimal feeding practices, healthcare (with a focus on emerging diseases), biosecurity measures, housing solutions, marketing strategies, and processing techniques. Released on June 4, 2024, with a 20 MB download size, the platform is built to optimize both productivity and welfare in swine farming. By offering accurate, timely, science-based information, IVRI Swine SHRIA helps farmers implement best practices that improve animal health, enhance farm efficiency, and boost profitability.
11. Fostering Knowledge Sharing and Advancing Veterinary Science through Innovative Digital Engagement
IVRI podcast series, launched on 8th October 2024 aims to expand IVRI’s educational reach by offering valuable insights to farmers, students, and veterinary professionals. This podcast serves as a platform to share research findings, expert interviews, inspiring conversations with specialists in the field and practical insights related to livestock farming, animal health, disease management, and more. The podcasts are uploaded on the IVRI Deemed University Educational YouTube Channel. More than 25 podcasts have been recorded, with 9 of them uploaded so far. The 9 videos have accumulated over 7,000 views, and they have received more than 600 likes. Each episode features experts who share practical knowledge, enhancing awareness and skills among listeners. This initiative supports IVRI's mission to promote knowledge sharing and innovation in veterinary science, using digital platforms to connect with a wider audience and tackle contemporary challenges in animal health, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
12. Students’ engagement in Extension Activities
The faculty of the division consistently encourages ICAR-IVRI students to actively participate in various extension and outreach programs, such as Mera Gaon-Mera Gaurav, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Environment Day, and farmers' field visits. These initiatives aim to instill social values, enhance their sense of responsibility, and broaden their understanding of societal issues and challenges by fostering meaningful connections with the community.
